biography

Yusuke Kitagawa is someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes art. It's all he thinks about, and he sees beauty in everything around him, constantly inspired by the wonder of the world, yet puzzled by his own emotions and those of the people around him. He longs to express them, but how can one paint what they do not truly understand? And how can he reconcile the beauty he sees with the trauma and abuse he endured?His mother died when he was three and he was taken in by Ichiyusai Madarame. He skipped three grades over the course of his schooling, placing him in the second year of high school at only thirteen.Madarame never treated him well, seeing him as an asset more than a son and treating him the same as any other pupil. Living communally in a shack, they weren't given proper food, housing, or privacy, with the only lock being on Madarame's door. He had strict quotas to meet, and his art was claimed and displayed as Madarame's own. Still, Yusuke was grateful to him for taking him in and honored to be his pupil, especially since the Sayuri meant so much to him. He felt indebted to him, and averted his eyes from Madarame's cruelties, suppressing his desire for freedom and convincing himself he was giving his ideas away by choice, even as he brushed his rage onto the canvas.After joining the Phantom Thieves and taking down Madarame, Yusuke fell into an art slump. Forced to see the reality of the world, the ugliness and shades of grey instead of just the superficial beauty, he was left grappling with his identity as a person and as an artist, as well as his perception of the world around him and his views on it. With the help of his friends, though, he began processing his trauma, re-learning how to see the beauty in the human heart and accepting the contradictory nature of the world so he could begin forging his identity anew. OTHER.
